Why am I getting a "hold could not be placed" or "unable to place a request" message when I try to place a hold in the catalog?

You may see one of these errors in our catalog when you try to place a hold:

  • Your hold could not be placed. Borrower has met his or her maximum hold quota.
  • Unable to place a request on this item. Cannot place any more requests on this item.

There are two reasons you will see these messages:

  • You have reached the limit of 30 holds. Wait until you have received one of your current holds - or cancel one - and try again.
  • You are trying to place a hold on a title you already have on hold. To see if this is the case, go to My Account -> Titles On Hold.

If neither of these fits your situation, contact us or call your local library for help. We will need your name, library card number, and the title you want to hold.
